Hey y'all! i'm Carla.
Perhaps you've landed on my page because you saw me in a show, or maybe I've had your kiddos as students, or maybe you're looking to collaborate. Before we go further, let me just say, thank you for being here and for your interest in my work, and if you’re looking to collaborate, please fill out my contact form and let's make some magic!
If you're new here, hi, I’m Carla! I'm a queer, Afro-Latina performer, educator and choreographer currently based in New York City. I am extremely passionate about the arts and education, and most importantly, I believe that folx should have access to both regardless of their background. In addition to my on-stage career, my off-stage work over the past few years has led me to a leadership role in AEA that I’m profoundly proud of, as I’ve been able to solidify my convictions and focus on creating equitable and inclusive environments within the performing arts — which is no easy task... but it's the social change for me!
So how did I get here? Technically, on an airplane from Puerto Rico to Southwest Florida and then eventually to Boston. I grew up in dance studios, taking private voice lessons, and performing in school musicals, but I have to acknowledge that those opportunities were solely because of the generosity of others. Every scholarship and grant that has allowed me to get to where I am, has only fueled my commitment to give back to my community and carve a path for other BIPOC folx to do the same and break the barriers and limitations of our industry. Somos mas fuertes juntos que separados.
When I'm not onstage (or channeling my inner AOC) my favorite place to be is anywhere with my wife, Jenny. Together, we love traveling, watching truly horrible reality television, looking at houses we can't afford on Zillow, and spending time with family in New England. I also enjoy taking aerial hoop classes and scouting out really good iced coffee from local shops.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me get to this point in my career — if you want the deets, peep the resume! I promise to keep doing the work, on stage and off. If you ever want to connect, please reach out, and if you’re feeling like giving back today, some of my favorite organizations are listed below.
